Day 8: Monday, January 24, 2011

Today, classes started!  And 8:30am rolled around really quickly!  When we got to school, we listened to another orientation type thing; it was like an academic intro to everything.  They introduced our teachers and gave us an overview of what we will be learning in class.  The classes seemed really easy.  One of the fashion classes showed a PowerPoint presentation of a project we’d be working on throughout the semester, and it looked like something I could make in a few hours!  So that’s nice J  I think Italian is going to be my hardest class!

We had about a two hour break for lunch, so all the girls decided to go to a travel agency and see what the deal is for booking some trips!  I AM SO ANXIOUS to travel!  I want to go everywhere; and I feel like all I have been doing the past week is living on the airline websites trying to find cheap flights.  AND WE DID BOOK A TRIP TO PARIS NEXT WEEKEND! For like $80 round trip…so I am SUPER EXCITED!!!  However, we realized this morning that we have a field trip on Friday, and we booked a flight to leave on Thursday!  So we’re going to have to talk to our teachers, because we can’t cancel it!  Hopefully they’ll let us work something out!  But I really, really want to go somewhere this weekend. ANYWHERE! I just want to see the world J  But anyways, we went to the travel agency, and I almost felt like the lady didn’t really know what she was talking about, she was spitting out prices that were so much more expensive than I found myself online.  So we decided to go to the train station tomorrow morning, because…our class in the morning is cancelled! Haha first day…the professor couldn’t make it, I wasn’t complaining!

After the travel agency, we got lunch at a restaurant called “California Bakery,” and they sold almost all American food!  It was wonderful!  Everyone says you can’t find bagels…well that’s wrong!  I had a chicken salad on a bagel, and it was delicious!  However, they did charge each person 2E just to sit down and be served…which apparently is somewhat common.  Kind of a bummer; a cover charge to eat??? C’mon! AND…GREAT NEWS!!!  They sell PEANUT BUTTER!!!  Peanut butter is IMPOSSIBLE to find in Italy!  So when the jar I brought runs out, I WILL be making a run there!

After lunch, the girls took us to their apartment because we were anxious to see what their living conditions were like!  And they were right, ours are far superior to theirs.  They literally live in a dorm-like setting; lofted beds, one small room.  I would WAY rather live where we live.  And, they are also a lot farther from school.

When we got back to school, we had our first actual class.  Our teacher seems really nice, but he scared me in the beginning!  He started going off in Italian…and I of course, had no idea what he was saying!  But he gave us the syllabus, and we learned the very basics, like how to introduce yourself, etc.  The class is very interactive, which is nice…but it also leaves a lot of opportunity to make a dick out of yourself.  For instance, when the teacher went up to each person and introduced himself, then had you introduce yourself to the class…I was so preoccupied trying to pronounce everything right, I said I was Italian.  Really!?  Embarrassing.

After class, we stopped at the supermarket, and got some wine, cheese, bread, and olive oil.  And that was our dinner.  And it was amazing J  I spent the rest of the night Skyping Kevin, and just hanging out!
