Day 93: Tuesday, April 19, 2011

Let me preface this post by saying that I know zero Italian.  I got a 96% on my Italian final exam, but I know nothing.  I don't really know how that happened.  Or how have I managed to live here for three and a half months and pick up nothing, but it has happened.  So today, Caitlin and I decided to do a little apertivo for dinner.  We ordered our drinks by pointing to what we want on the menu (like we usually do) and then go up to get our food.  When we came back the server was delivering our drinks and ready to collect our money.  We had been to the restaurant before, so we knew it was 8E per person.  The server set our drinks down then looked at us and said "seidici" (sixteen).  Completely caught off guard, we both looked at each other totally confused, then told him we didn't speak Italian.  He stared back and repeated "seidici" while making money gestures with his hands.  We caught on, and for some reason we thought it was 6.5E.  So we gave him 6.5E each, then were confused as to why he was still standing there after we gave it to him.  After about a minute more of confusion and things getting lost in translation, another server came up behind ours and said "sixteen euros girls," then walked away.  Dumbfounded, we gave him the correct the change then ate the rest of the meal ashamed.  Did we really not know what "seidici" meant.  EmbarrassingHumiliating, to say the least.
